The techno-optimist. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder ofEthereum He frequently shares his ideas on his personal blog. This week, he plunges us into the heart of his “techno-optimism”or how technology could save the world.
Vitalik Buterin: a techno-optimist
In practice, this article appears one month after the publication of the The Techno-Optimist Manifesto per Marc Andreessen. This manifesto is a ode to technological evolution for the benefit of human evolution.
A vision that Vitalik Buterin seems to share, who wanted to share his “techno-optimism”. In fact, according to Buterin, technology has already brought many benefits to humanity. He cites in particular the increase in life expectancy, the reduction of poverty and the spread of education.
Buterin recognizes, however, that the latter can also be used for nefarious purposes. He cites, for example, nuclear weapons, climate change caused by human activities and economic inequalities that may have resulted from technological development.
Despite these risks, Buterin believes the benefits of the technology outweigh the risks. He is confident that technology can be used to solve problems facing humanity, such as poverty, disease and climate change.
Decentralization as a solution
In your article, Buterin defends the idea that decentralization can be central to positive technological development. He believes that decentralization can help solve some of the problems humanity faces, such as concentration of power, there corruption and theinefficiency.
“Blockchains allow us to create economic and social structures with a “shared hard drive” without having to rely on centralized actors. Cryptocurrencies allow individuals to save money and conduct financial transactions, as they did before the Internet with cash, without relying on trusted third parties who could change their rules at the drop of a hat. »
However, Buterin recognizes that decentralization is not a silver bullet. He points out that decentralization can also bring disadvantages, such as:
- There complexity : Decentralization can make a system or resource more complex to manage;
- O cost : Decentralization can be more expensive than centralization;
- There security : Decentralized systems may be more vulnerable to attacks.
Buterin believes these disadvantages can be managed through good design and implementation. He says the benefits of decentralization outweigh the disadvantages.
The ideas in this manifesto and the dual aspects of technologies are obviously present in cryptocurrencies. Let us take the example of Tornado Cash Protocol, whose founders are accused of money laundering. However, they only developed an open source tool, which could later be used for malicious purposes by certain users.
