Top Gun: Maverick was expected to be the biggest box office earner of 2022, although it is (at the time of writing) about to be beaten by Avatar: The Way of Water. But look away from cinemas and the film has established itself as the home entertainment titan of the year, at least in the UK, just as Variety reported that the film was the UK’s biggest seller in that area.
The film also generated a lot of interest in the original Top Gun, with that film being the biggest film rented in the UK in 2022.
As for what followed Top Gun: Maverick on the home entertainment charts, second place went to Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Looking at TV, the biggest show of the year for the UK was House of the Dragon, although as expected, British sci-fi series Doctor Who also claimed some spots in the top ten of the charts thanks to the final season and the a holiday. Special.
Otherwise, streamers in the UK have continued to grow and expand, with the country now accounting for around 50 million total subscriptions, showing a 6.4% year-on-year increase through 2021.
Finally, statistics showed that DVDs and Blu-Rays were still popular, with Downton Abbey: A New Era being the biggest DVD producer, while Dune was the biggest Blu-Ray seller.
